Where should you start?

People often get stuck when they try to write their stories from the beginning. But books and stories are virtually never written in the order they appear. They start as scraps of memory, moments and scenes that very gradually begin to take a shape all their own.

So where do you start?

I often advise people to 'go where the energy is.' In other words, start with a single scene that calls to you, a moment that has power. You don't need to know 'how your story starts' yet, or even how it will be structured, as you may (and probably will) change the order and shape of things as you go.

If you start with part of the story that has energy, you'll have begun (phew!), and following that energy will give you momentum, freedom, and a glimpse of the next horizon.
