THIS COULD
MAKE YOU
A BETTER WRITER

A (lively!) writing workshop with
bestselling author Alison Wearing

Originally a live workshop, the video recording is now available for purchase.

I read a LOT of memoirs and You Could Make This Place Beautiful is one of the finest I’ve come across in a while.
As I was devouring it—literally chewing and savouring it page by page—I was also appreciating how effectively and openly the writer was addressing many of the questions and challenges that face most of us at some point in the memoir writing process:

How do I protect the people in my story?

What if someone doesn’t want me to write this?

How much of this is My Story and how much of it Ours?

Can I tell the whole story and still leave things out?

Is it possible to make a difficult or heartbreaking story readable for others?

Is it possible to make it beautiful?

What if there’s no resolution? When/how does the story end?

There is so much to be learned from this gorgeous book and so many ways that it can help us become better writers that I decided to share my insights and enthusiasm in the form of a workshop.

This workshop isn’t only about celebrating and learning from this book.
It is about learning to read as a writer and being able to learn from every book you read.

Two Small Things:
1. The author is the American poet Maggie Smith, not the British actor!
2. You do NOT need to read the book to benefit from this workshop, but obviously I think it’s a great read and encourage you to read it at some point! It is available through all the usual channels or you can learn a bit more about it HERE.
